SUMMARY:Canonbury Tower Tour
DESCRIPTION:Canonbury Tower was built in the late 16th century and is a rare survivor of Tudor domestic architecture in London. The Tower was added onto a manor house built in the early 1500s as the country retreat of the Canons of St Bartholomew’s Priory in Smithfield.\nOn this 90-minute tour you’ll see the existing Tudor interiors and hear about the many notable characters associated with the building. Over the centuries these have included Thomas Cromwell of Wolf Hall fame\, Henry VIII’s fourth wife\, Anne of Cleves\, Francis Bacon and the writers Washington Irving (Sleepy Hollow) and Oliver Goldsmith (The Vicar of Wakefield). You’ll also have the chance to climb up to the rooftop which affords wonderful views over London in all directions.\nCanonbury Tower is owned by the Marquess of Northampton and has been in the same family since the 16th century. See evidence of palatial variety theatres\, drapery stores\, men’s outfitters\, gin palaces\, tea rooms\, banqueting halls and the early labyrinthine department stores\, one of which grew to become one of the best-known shops in North London\, succeeding into the latter part of the twentieth century. And learn about its friendly rival round the corner\, which was slightly larger\, more impressive and\, possibly\, an even more successful establishment in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Today its quarter-of-a-million residents live in an area that boasts world-class cultural venues but also less green space than any other London borough. \nThe story of how Islington developed over the centuries provides many tales of social\, cultural and political history. The walk takes in many of central Islington’s most fascinating sites – some well-known and others even locals may not be familiar with. \nYou’ll see a Tudor house that’s been in the same family since the 16th century\, the first church bombed in World War II and some of the pioneering homes built in the early 20th century as Islington’s population boomed. You’ll also find out how the world-famous Union Chapel got its name and why you should never graffiti in a library book… The tour lasts about 2 hours and starts at Highbury & Islington station.

DESCRIPTION:Remnants of old advertising\, for bygone brands and businesses\, are today known as ‘ghostsigns’ and there are some good examples to be found clinging to the walls above Islington’s busy streets. Most of the signs we’ll look at on this two-hour walk will be the hand-painted variety\, as per the example shown here which is an adaptation of one of the signs you’ll see on the tour. DESCRIPTION:Since the middle-ages\, when religious pageants were held on the banks of the River Fleet and entertainers performed at the annual Bartholomew’s Fair\, Clerkenwell has been a part of London steeped in cultural history. \nTheatre\, literature\, music\, film\, architecture\, food\, sculpture and visual art spanning the last 900 years are all covered as we wander the streets and alleys of this atmospheric neighbourhood. \nIn addition to following in the footsteps of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens\, along the way you’ll hear how William Morris\, Agatha Christie\, Vladimir Lenin\, William Hogarth and Benjamin Franklin have all left their mark on Clerkenwell. \nIn London’s oldest parish church you’ll see a striking sculpture by one of Britain’s most controversial artists. Down hidden alleyways you’ll find out about one of London’s great 17th-century theatres\, a pioneering architectural partnership and an unsung champion of classical music. You’ll also see why this historic area has been a location for some of Hollywood’s biggest movies. And you’ll get the chance to see close-up the site that gave Clerkenwell its name.

DESCRIPTION:A statue in honour of Mary Wollstonecraft is now a feature of Newington Green but there’s a long history of radical thought in the area\, explored on this walk. The Unitarian Chapel is the oldest nonconformist chapel still in use\, and the original China Inland Mission still stands next to the Green. The walk will also explore connections to the New River and find evidence of a demolished Jewish synagogue\, as well as exploring the beautiful Canonbury villas nearby.

DESCRIPTION:Holloway’s main shopping area has a wealth of Jazz Age and Streamline Moderne architecture simply hiding in plain view. Since the 1870s this area has been north London’s main shopping area. As this continued into the 1920s and 1930s many businesses updated or rebuilt in the new Moderne styles of that time. SUMMARY:Ghostsigns of Islington: bygone brands and businesses
DESCRIPTION:Remnants of bygone advertising\, for bygone brands and businesses\, are still visible today\, clinging to the walls above our busy streets. These old signs are now commonly referred to as ‘ghostsigns’ and most of the ones we’ll look at on this walk will be the hand-painted variety\, as per the example I’ve created for this header image which is an adaptation of one of the signs you’ll see on the tour. \nThis hand-crafted and labour-intensive form of advertising might seem strange to us today\, with our large-format printing\, lightboxes and interactive screens\, but 100 years ago hand-painted signs like this were commonplace; the buildings that bore them barely visible beneath a patchwork of signage for branded products\, well-known shops and local tradesmen. \nOn this walking tour you will see many surviving signs and at each stop you’ll hear fascinating and intriguing stories about the businesses\, people or products behind the ads; from vets to vegans\, rubber to metal and cars to chemists. I will also point out other types of non-painted ‘ghostsigns’ along the way.
