SUMMARY:Oh What a Circus; the elephants escape – a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:In 1884 Sanger’s Circus came to the south-east corner of Parliament Fields. Some of the animals and vehicles arrived via rail and\, during the unloading process\, two of the four performing elephants got unusually spooked and broke free of the yard\, fleeing through nearby streets\, causing mayhem and excitement along the way. \nIda and Palm’s journey ended in N19 where they had managed to trap themselves in a basement space between two residential houses. Luckily\, the elephants were unharmed\, although there were some extraneous casualties along the way\, and\, after being rescued\, they walked to the circus site and the show went on as planned\, no doubt better attended than previously expected. \nThis walking tour follows the whole of the elephants’ rampaging route to see the kind of obstacles these two lost and confused beasts would have experienced along the way. \nWe’ll admire Georgian streets\, Victorian terraces\, cobbled lanes and narrow little alleys including a row of cottages in Little Green Street which was only recently saved from demolition. Learn about the real “Greatest Showman” and what was one of the biggest circus companies in the world at that time. Hear about music\, Margate and monkeys. See how the arrival of railways changed the area. It all helps to make this a really evocative tour. \nAs per my other walks\, I will be pointing out other things of interest along the way including ghostsigns and film locations. \n\nThe walk lasts approx two hours\, starting near Gospel Oak station and ending amid-way between Tufnell Park and Archway stations.\nThe exact meeting point will be clearly described on your ticket and confirmation – these will both be sent via email after purchase.\nPlease do not rely on maps supplied through other non-Eventbrite apps can sometimes give incorrect/vague information.

SUMMARY:Waterways\, Wharves and Warehouses – a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:Today the tow path is open to all\, lined with colourful houseboats\, waterside apartments and offices\, well-used by walkers\, cyclists and joggers. We use it to experience a bit of calm and quiet away from the bustle of the shops and the cars. But it wasn’t always so lovely. \nThis 200-year-old waterway from Paddington to Limehouse has a rich history. It was constructed to link the north of England to London’s docklands on the River Thames providing a low-impact distribution network for heavy goods. The businesses that lined the water’s edge were dirty\, noisy\, dangerous hives of industry and manufacture. \nThe canal follows the boundary between Islington (old Finsbury) and Hackney (old Shoreditch) and along the way you’ll hear about the various products that were manufactured\, stored and distributed from the wharves here. Find out why the tow paths became no-go zones and the old warehouse buildings fell into disuse. Down hidden alleyways you’ll find out about one of London’s great 17th-century theatres\, a pioneering architectural partnership and an unsung champion of classical music. You’ll also see why this historic area has been a location for some of Hollywood’s biggest movies. And you’ll get the chance to see close-up the site that gave Clerkenwell its name. \nThe tour lasts about 2 hours. It starts outside Barbican underground station (Hammersmith & City line) and ends at Farringdon station.

SUMMARY:Canonbury Tower Tour
DESCRIPTION:Canonbury Tower was built in the late 16th century and is a rare survivor of Tudor domestic architecture in London. The Tower was added onto a manor house built in the early 1500s as the country retreat of the Canons of St Bartholomew’s Priory in Smithfield. \nOn this 90-minute tour you’ll see the existing Tudor interiors and hear about the many notable characters associated with the building. Over the centuries these have included Thomas Cromwell of Wolf Hall fame\, Henry VIII’s fourth wife\, Anne of Cleves\, Francis Bacon and the writers Washington Irving (Sleepy Hollow) and Oliver Goldsmith (The Vicar of Wakefield). You’ll also have the chance to climb up to the rooftop which affords wonderful views over London in all directions. \nCanonbury Tower is owned by the Marquess of Northampton and has been in the same family since the 16th century. All visitors are guests of the seventh Marquess\, Spencer Compton.

SUMMARY:Clerkenwell's Lost Monasteries
DESCRIPTION:This year Bart’s Hospital is celebrating its 900th anniversary on the same site that it was founded in 1123. It was originally part of St Bartholomew’s Priory\, founded by a courtier of Henry 1 in thanks for surviving a bout of malaria while on pilgrimage to Rome. \nSt Bartholomew’s was only one of four great religious houses in Clerkenwell that flourished for hundreds of years until Henry VIII closed them down. Come and see what is left of these once rich and influential monasteries and hear their stories – including the priors who lost their heads\, the monks who went to war and the secret tunnels. Three of the Priories – St Bartholomew’s\, The Charterhouse and the Order of St John – have a flourishing legacy to this day. \nOur tour does not go inside the surviving buildings but there are free museums that you can visit at both The Charterhouse and St John’s Gate and both also offer guided tours of their historic interiors. The tour meets at Farringdon Tube station. It takes about two hours and finishes with a visit to the Clerk’s Well which gave Clerkenwell its name.
