SUMMARY:Cultural Clerkenwell
DESCRIPTION:Since the middle-ages\, when religious pageants were held on the banks of the River Fleet and entertainers performed at the annual Bartholomew’s Fair\, Clerkenwell has been a part of London steeped in cultural history. \nTheatre\, literature\, music\, film\, architecture\, food\, sculpture and visual art spanning the last 900 years are all covered as we wander the streets and alleys of this atmospheric neighbourhood. \nIn addition to following in the footsteps of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens\, along the way you’ll hear how William Morris\, Agatha Christie\, Vladimir Lenin\, William Hogarth and Benjamin Franklin have all left their mark on Clerkenwell. \nIn London’s oldest parish church you’ll see a striking sculpture by one of Britain’s most controversial artists. Down hidden alleyways you’ll find out about one of London’s great 17th-century theatres\, a pioneering architectural partnership and an unsung champion of classical music. You’ll also see why this historic area has been a location for some of Hollywood’s biggest movies. And you’ll get the chance to see close-up the site that gave Clerkenwell its name.

SUMMARY:Canonbury Tower Tour
DESCRIPTION:See inside the oldest building in Islington and enjoy a magnificent view for miles over London from the roof of its tower.\nCanonbury Tower was built in the late 16th century and is a rare survivor of Tudor domestic architecture in London. The Tower was added onto a manor house built in the early 1500s as the country retreat of the Canons of St Bartholomew’s Priory in Smithfield.\nOn this 90-minute tour you’ll see the existing Tudor interiors and hear about the many notable characters associated with the building. Over the centuries these have included Thomas Cromwell of Wolf Hall fame\, Henry VIII’s fourth wife\, Anne of Cleves\, Francis Bacon and the writers Washington Irving (Sleepy Hollow) and Oliver Goldsmith (The Vicar of Wakefield). You’ll also have the chance to climb up to the rooftop which affords wonderful views over London in all directions.\nCanonbury Tower is owned by the Marquess of Northampton and has been in the same family since the 16th century. All visitors are guests of the seventh Marquess\, Spencer Compton.

SUMMARY:'Beating the Bounds' of Islington from the Regent's Canal to Old St
DESCRIPTION:This boundary walk between Islington and Hackney boroughs weaves around the areas either side of the Regent’s Canal\, City Rd Basin and City Rd. There’s a wealth of interest in the old boroughs of Finsbury and Shoreditch\, and the edge of the City in Moorfields. A varied mix of City Livery Company history\, ironworks\, canal basins\, WWII devastation\, the lost hospitals quarter\, a natural swimming pool and a mediaeval well. \nThis is one of a series of walks exploring the borders of today’s Islington Borough (with Hackney and Camden)\, looking at how this has evolved over the centuries due to a mix of changing land ownership\, parish church catchments\, significance of early settlements and roads\, and natural features such as springs and ponds.

SUMMARY:Islington between the Wars
DESCRIPTION:Local expert Philip Nelkon teleports you to a bygone Islington. \nTake a stroll along chic Upper Street and its surrounds to experience the first half of the 20th century and the hidden history of a less prosperous Islington. There was no NHS\, so where did the poor go for treatment and where could they get free milk? What were the shops like? What was showing at the cinemas? Where could you place a bet when betting was illegal? What is the “hole in the wall” and who used it? \nThis unusual and highly original walk is based around the recollections of a very special lady – Olive Clements\, born 1918\, who lived in Islington for more than a century and we hear vignettes of Olive’s life as she grows up ‘between the wars’.

SUMMARY:Ghostsigns of Islington: bygone brands and businesses
DESCRIPTION:Remnants of bygone advertising\, for bygone brands and businesses\, are still visible today\, clinging to the walls above our busy streets. These old signs are now commonly referred to as ‘ghostsigns’ and most of the ones we’ll look at on this walk will be the hand-painted variety\, as per the example I’ve created for this header image which is an adaptation of one of the signs you’ll see on the tour. \nThis hand-crafted and labour-intensive form of advertising might seem strange to us today\, with our large-format printing\, lightboxes and interactive screens\, but 100 years ago hand-painted signs like this were commonplace; the buildings that bore them barely visible beneath a patchwork of signage for branded products\, well-known shops and local tradesmen. \nOn this walking tour you will see many surviving signs and at each stop you’ll hear fascinating and intriguing stories about the businesses\, people or products behind the ads; from vets to vegans\, rubber to metal and cars to chemists. I will also point out other types of non-painted ‘ghostsigns’ along the way.

SUMMARY:Evolving Islington
DESCRIPTION:Discover how Islington developed from a rural settlement and centre for dairy farming into the diverse\, bustling area it is today. \nIn 1086 the Domesday Book reported that Islington contained just 27 households. Today its quarter-of-a-million residents live in an area that boasts world-class cultural venues but also less green space than any other London borough. \nThe story of how Islington developed over the centuries provides many tales of social\, cultural and political history. The walk takes in many of central Islington’s most fascinating sites – some well-known and others even locals may not be familiar with. \nYou’ll see a Tudor house that’s been in the same family since the 16th century\, the first church bombed in World War II and some of the pioneering homes built in the early 20th century as Islington’s population boomed. You’ll also find out how the world-famous Union Chapel got its name and why you should never graffiti in a library book… \nThe tour lasts about 2 hours. It starts at Highbury & Islington station (we’ll meet at the round benches near the station) and ends in Islington Square off Upper Street\, a 10-minute walk from both Angel and

SUMMARY:Oh What a Circus; the elephants escape – a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:In 1884 Sanger’s Circus came to the south-east corner of Parliament Fields. Some of the animals and vehicles arrived via rail and\, during the unloading process\, two of the four performing elephants got unusually spooked and broke free of the yard\, fleeing through nearby streets\, causing mayhem and excitement along the way. \nIda and Palm’s journey ended in N19 where they had managed to trap themselves in a basement space between two residential houses. Luckily\, the elephants were unharmed\, although there were some extraneous casualties along the way\, and\, after being rescued\, they walked to the circus site and the show went on as planned\, no doubt better attended than previously expected. \nThis walking tour follows the whole of the elephants’ rampaging route to see the kind of obstacles these two lost and confused beasts would have experienced along the way. \nWe’ll admire Georgian streets\, Victorian terraces\, cobbled lanes and narrow little alleys including a row of cottages in Little Green Street which was only recently saved from demolition. Learn about the real “Greatest Showman” and what was one of the biggest circus companies in the world at that time. Hear about music\, Margate and monkeys. See how the arrival of railways changed the area. It all helps to make this a really evocative tour. \nAs per my other walks\, I will be pointing out other things of interest along the way including ghostsigns and film locations. \n\nThe walk lasts approx two hours\, starting near Gospel Oak station and ending amid-way between Tufnell Park and Archway stations.\nThe exact meeting point will be clearly described on your ticket and confirmation – these will both be sent via email after purchase.\nPlease do not rely on maps supplied through other non-Eventbrite apps can sometimes give incorrect/vague information.

SUMMARY:Waterways\, Wharves and Warehouses – a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:Today the tow path is open to all\, lined with colourful houseboats\, waterside apartments and offices\, well-used by walkers\, cyclists and joggers. We use it to experience a bit of calm and quiet away from the bustle of the shops and the cars. But it wasn’t always so lovely. \nThis 200-year-old waterway from Paddington to Limehouse has a rich history. It was constructed to link the north of England to London’s docklands on the River Thames providing a low-impact distribution network for heavy goods. The businesses that lined the water’s edge were dirty\, noisy\, dangerous hives of industry and manufacture. \nThe canal follows the boundary between Islington (old Finsbury) and Hackney (old Shoreditch) and along the way you’ll hear about the various products that were manufactured\, stored and distributed from the wharves here. Find out why the tow paths became no-go zones and the old warehouse buildings fell into disuse. And learn how the area was later regenerated and transformed into the environment that we see and enjoy today. \n\nThe walk begins and ends at City Road Basin\, mid-way between Angel and Old Street tube stations\, and lasts just approx 2 hours.\nThe exact meeting point will be clearly described on your ticket and confirmation – these will both be sent via email after purchase.\nPlease do not rely on maps supplied through other non-Eventbrite apps can sometimes give incorrect/vague information.

You’ll also find out how the world-famous Union Chapel got its name and why you should never graffiti in a library book…
