Enjoy St Patrick’s Day with Islington Guided Walks who are offering a live presentation of the Irish in Islington, past and present. Irish people have lived in the borough for centuries, but the 50s and 60s brought many emigrants – the navvies and nurses generation- who transformed pubs and dancehalls, and even Arsenal teams of the 1960s and 1970s. Navigator Square at Archway commemorates the many Irish who helped rebuild post-war Britain.

The nearby Whittington Hospital still has a substantial contingent of Irish nurses, who settled in North London, often attending St Joseph’s Church on Highgate Hill and dancing at the Gresham Ballroom on Holloway Road. Learn more about Irish life and culture on this live virtual tour.

This walk is presented in partnership with Islington Museum.
