Sewers and Toilets – How London Solved its Sanitation Problems – Walking Tour

In the fifty years between 1801 and 1851 Londons population almost tripled, the largest city the world had ever seen – and creating huge public health challenges.

Outbreaks of Cholera and Typhoid killed thousands of people, while lack of access to clean water and proper toilets made life difficult for most Londoners. This walk looks at the problems, and tells the story of the people who helped improve public health in London
