Close to where the Angel (above) now looks out over London, the 18th century artist Canaletto stood to sketch a panorama of the City. We will use his panorama as a guide on our stroll around some of the most popular features of Islington: an ancient highway and two ancient inns; a famous well, now a centre for ballet; the headquarters of a 17th century venture that brought fresh water to London and the beautiful streets and squares which are named after it. We’ll also take a peep at London’s most mysterious art gallery, an MP who appears to be immortal, a business that failed to tantalise a poet, and a pub which hosted notorious burglars.
